The short version: We collect your email address to send you the weekly digest. We do not sell it, rent it, or share it with third parties for marketing. You can unsubscribe any time with one click. That is the whole deal.

CommunityHighlights ("we," "us," or "our") is a weekly email digest and web platform operated by CommunityHighlights Inc., registered at 123 Community Ave, Suite 4B, San Francisco, CA 94105, United States.

We curate and surface the most-discussed posts from online communities and deliver them to subscribers every Monday. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information collected through our website and email subscription service.

2. What We Collect

Information you provide directly:

  • Email address — required to send the weekly digest.
  • First name (optional) — used to personalize the greeting in emails.
  • Preferences (optional) — community topics you want to see more of.

Information collected automatically:

  • Email engagement data — opens, clicks, and unsubscribes, collected via our email service provider to measure what content resonates.
  • Website analytics — page views, referral sources, device type, and approximate location (country/city level only), collected via privacy-respecting analytics tools.
  • IP address — collected temporarily in server logs for security purposes, not stored long-term.

We do not collect payment information, government IDs, social media credentials, or any sensitive personal data.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect exclusively to:

  • Send you the weekly CommunityHighlights digest (the whole point).
  • Personalize content based on your stated preferences.
  • Improve our curation by understanding which posts generate the most engagement.
  • Maintain website security and prevent abuse.
  • Comply with legal obligations.

We will never use your email address to send unsolicited commercial offers from third parties, run retargeting ad campaigns, or sell access to your inbox.

4. Data Sharing

We share data only in the following limited circumstances:

  • Email service providers — We use trusted providers (such as Mailchimp or ConvertKit) to send emails. They process your email address solely on our behalf under data processing agreements.
  • Analytics providers — Aggregated, anonymized analytics may be processed by third-party tools. These providers cannot identify you individually.
  • Legal requirements — If required by law, court order, or governmental authority, we may disclose information. We will notify you where legally permitted to do so.
  • Business transfers — In the event of a merger or acquisition, subscriber data may be transferred. You will be notified and given the opportunity to opt out.

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. Period.

5. Cookies and Tracking

Our website uses minimal cookies:

  • Essential cookies — Required for the website to function (session management, security). Cannot be disabled.
  • Analytics cookies — Help us understand how visitors use the site. These are anonymized and do not track you across other websites. You can opt out via your browser settings.

Our emails may include a tracking pixel to measure open rates. You can disable this by turning off automatic image loading in your email client.

We do not use advertising cookies, cross-site tracking, or fingerprinting technologies.

6. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you have the right to:

California residents: You have additional rights under the CCPA, including the right to know, delete, and opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell personal information, so the opt-out right does not apply — but all other rights do.

EU/UK residents: You are protected by GDPR/UK GDPR. Our legal basis for processing is consent (you signed up) and legitimate interests (website analytics). You have the right to lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority.

7. Data Retention

We keep your email address and preferences for as long as you remain subscribed. When you unsubscribe:

  • We remove your address from all active sending lists immediately.
  • We retain a suppression record (your email in hashed form) for up to 2 years to ensure we do not accidentally re-add you.
  • All other personal data is deleted within 90 days.

Server logs containing IP addresses are automatically purged after 30 days.

8. Security

We take security seriously:

  • All data is transmitted over encrypted connections (TLS/SSL).
  • Access to subscriber data is restricted to team members who need it to operate the service.
  • We use industry-standard email service providers with SOC 2 certification.
  • We conduct regular security reviews of our infrastructure.

No system is perfectly secure. In the event of a data breach affecting your information, we will notify you within 72 hours of discovery, in accordance with applicable law.

9. Children's Privacy

CommunityHighlights is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with their data, please contact us at privacy@communityhighlights.com and we will delete it promptly.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will:

  • Update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
  • Notify active subscribers via email at least 14 days before changes take effect.
  • Provide a clear summary of what changed and why.

Continued use of our service after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
